Intro

Candidate introduces self with full name and role

Adheres to appropriate infection control measures

Identifies patient with 2 pieces of information - eg name and date of birth

Gains consent

End of the bed o’gram - makes comments on patients appearance (well or unwell)

Airway

Checks airway and considers airway adjuncts such as NP / OP / I-Gel if required

Checks C-spine tenderness and offers immobilisation if required

Breathing

EXAM

Checks respiratory rate

Checks oxygen saturation

Checks trachea is central

Checks chest expansion

Checks percussion if indicated

Auscultates the chest

INTERVENTION AND INTERPRETATION

Suggests appropriate investigation (CXR, peak flow)

Suggests appropriate treatments (high flow O2, cannula for pneumothorax)

Cardio

EXAM

Checks pulse (rate, rhythm, volume)

Requests BP

Checks cap refill

Checks JVP

Auscultation heart sounds

Assesses fluid balance - checks pitting oedema

INTERVENTION AND INTERPRETATION

Suggests appropriate investigation (Bloods, Gas, Lactate, ECG, urine output)

Suggests appropriate treatments (IV cannula, IO access, IV fluid, drugs, Abx)

If appropriate starts life support protocol e.g. cardiac arrest situation

Checks Consciousness (AVPU)

Checks Pupils

Checks Blood Glucose

Requests Temp

Exposure

Inspects full body for rashes / bleeding / bruising / scars and removes clothing as appropriate whilst maintaining dignity

Inspects calves for signs of DVT

Diagnosis and Interpretation

Gives appropriate differential

Complete examination

States any further management including reviewing the patients notes and drug charts, documenting the A-E, requesting senior / ICU review
